It Can’t Happen Here

December 20, 2004

In 2002 I asked my House colleagues a rhetorical question with regard to the onslaught of government growth in the post-September 11th era: Is America becoming a police state?

The question is no longer rhetorical. We are not yet living in a total police state, but it is fast approaching. The seeds of future tyranny have been sown, and many of our basic protections against government have been undermined. The atmosphere since 2001 has permitted Congress to create whole new departments and agencies that purport to make us safer- always at the expense of our liberty. But security and liberty go hand-in-hand. Members of Congress, like too many Americans, don’t understand that a society with no constraints on its government cannot be secure. History proves that societies crumble when their governments become more powerful than the people and private institutions.

Unfortunately, the new intelligence bill passed by Congress two weeks ago moves us closer to an encroaching police state by imposing the precursor to a full-fledged national ID card. Within two years, every American will need a “conforming” ID to deal with any federal agency– including TSA at the airport.

Undoubtedly many Americans and members of Congress don’t believe America is becoming a police state, which is reasonable enough. They associate the phrase with highly visible symbols of authoritarianism like military patrols, martial law, and summary executions. But we ought to be concerned that we have laid the foundation for tyranny by making the public more docile, more accustomed to government bullying, and more accepting of arbitrary authority- all in the name of security. Our love for liberty above all has been so diminished that we tolerate intrusions into our privacy that would have been abhorred just a few years ago. We tolerate inconveniences and infringements upon our liberties in a manner that reflects poorly on our great national character of rugged individualism. American history, at least in part, is a history of people who don’t like being told what to do. Yet we are increasingly empowering the federal government and its agents to run our lives.

Terror, fear, and crises like 9-11 are used to achieve complacency and obedience, especially when citizens are deluded into believing they are still a free people. The loss of liberty, we are assured, will be minimal, short-lived, and necessary. Many citizens believe that once the war on terror is over, restrictions on their liberties will be reversed. But this war is undeclared and open-ended, with no precise enemy and no expressly stated final goal. Terrorism will never be eradicated completely; does this mean future presidents will assert extraordinary war powers indefinitely?

Washington DC provides a vivid illustration of what our future might look like. Visitors to Capitol Hill encounter police barricades, metal detectors, paramilitary officers carrying fully automatic rifles, police dogs, ID checks, and vehicle stops. The people are totally disarmed; only the police and criminals have guns. Surveillance cameras are everywhere, monitoring street activity, subway travel, parks, and federal buildings. There’s not much evidence of an open society in Washington, DC, yet most folks do not complain– anything goes if it’s for government-provided safety and security.

After all, proponents argue, the government is doing all this to catch the bad guys. If you don’t have anything to hide, they ask, what are you so afraid of? The answer is that I’m afraid of losing the last vestiges of privacy that a free society should hold dear. I’m afraid of creating a society where the burden is on citizens to prove their innocence, rather than on government to prove wrongdoing. Most of all, I’m afraid of living in a society where a subservient populace surrenders its liberties to an all-powerful government.

It may be true that average Americans do not feel intimidated by the encroachment of the police state. Americans remain tolerant of what they see as mere nuisances because they have been deluded into believing total government supervision is necessary and helpful, and because they still enjoy a high level of material comfort. That tolerance may wane, however, as our standard of living falls due to spiraling debt, endless deficit spending at home and abroad, a declining fiat dollar, inflation, higher interest rates, and failing entitlement programs. At that point attitudes toward omnipotent government may change, but the trend toward authoritarianism will be difficult to reverse.

Those who believe a police state can’t happen here are poor students of history. Every government, democratic or not, is capable of tyranny. We must understand this if we hope to remain a free people.

    Well, duh.

Still, it’s hard to be sympathetic. In a participatory democracy, people get the politics they deserve.

I guess we must have wanted a gerrymandered Texas, gay prostitutes in the White House press corps, a moronically bungled invasion of a foreign country, and endless debt. After all, that’s what we voted for.

And when people start ending up in Guantanamo to be tortured, maimed or psychologically broken down — not just for being the wrong nationality (like now), but for what they check out of the library or who they are seen with in public — I’ll be in a different country somewhere, voting that we don’t accept any more American refugees.

I can’t believe that it is taking people so long to see the truth. Since the end of the Soviet Union, America has been rushing headlong to replace it. As things become more open and less oppressed there, we here are fast loosing our liberty. 911 aside even our small personal liberties are being lost. Certain groups of people are making rules and decisions for all. What we watch on TV, games, when and where we smoke and how much we pay for it, what we do with our bodies. Small narrowminded people can .judge and control the actions of others because they have money and power. I no longer live in the land of the free and the brave. And people are so gullible that they are easily diverted by the same tactics that Hitler used. Make a group or groups of people scapegoats and throw attention off of what you are doing.

I was delighted to read this article, which led me to believe that -at last- something good is happening in America.

Putting aside all the prejudices, all the petty anti-americanism to which we (Europeans) have often been exposed, the situation reminds me of a Greek proverb “rotting fish starts smelling in its head’.

I think that the world, quire generally, is tired of all this; also tired of the ubiquitous persistence of “two-party systems” in many countries, which seem inadequate to deal with the emerging “Long Tail” phenomena, the positive side-effects of the information revolution.

It may be that our species will be forced to change its attitude towards the planet, too, in order to survive. But -first and foremost- the exact opposite process of the one denounced by Mr. Ron Pail, the “Long Tail” process of people asserting their rights and preferences “bottom-up”, must be seen and recognised as the only viable long-term antidote to our senescent political and social systems.

The one-party system failed about two decades ago. Perhaps the two-party system is also beginning to crumble. The world is far too complicated for effective centralised control, of one form or the other. It requires armies of specialists, scientists, experts, engineers, advisors, etc. etc. so that the only remaining useful role for “strong men of government” is marketing their social personas (and the prestige of hidden guys who support them).

Pyramids are perhaps only meaningful as ancient relics, not as effective systems of modern democracy.

While our nation was wallowing in the post-9/11 phase and our leaders were coming up with new and improved ways to dispense with the Constitution, I sat down and reread Sinclair Lewis’ old chestnut from the 1930s, “It Can’t Happen Here.” And, oh hell yes it can happen here. The novel may have been held up as a what-if back then, a nutty prophecy when it was first published, but somewhere in the past five years it became truth. If you can find that novel somewhere, grab it, read it, and get educated.

We Americans like our conveniences. We like our peace and safety. We like these things enough that we’d gladly trade our natural rights to insure these. And somewhere along the line, we always end up screwing ourselves on the deal. And that’s what we’re seeing now.

The red tape here is IMMENSE! My parents, when we moved here, had to prove they were married (I’m canadian), and they wanted a statement from the government saying that they were married, but all they had was the church record, which was not good for the government. So we got the church record. The real point of this story, is that people do not know HOW inconvenienced you are by a police-type state. YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW BAD IT IS UNTIL YOU EXPERIENCE IT! (NOTE: I am in no-way calling belgium a police state, just meerly very socialistic and a bit inconvenient.)

I’m voting for Ron Paul in ’08….well I would if I was American ;).

One of the biggest problems with America is that instead of voting on issues and for the common good, you are focused on the Republic/Democrat dichotomy. Democracy can’t live when people will always vote Republic or always Democrat come hell, come high water. They are not looking at the issues objectively they are locked into an almost opiate-like trust of one party, or a similarly entrenched distrust of the other, or both.

Another problem is that your media has such strong ideological prisms it filters all the news through that your country would need very very strong lenses to correct that distorted vision!

Yet another problem is that your country is so large that politics is so disjointed from the people. How many Americans will get to meet and discuss issues with your Senators let alone your President? It’s very easy for Ivory Towers to form, and the colour of your President’s residence is rather ironic in that regard.

And this isn’t even covering the incredibly low voter turn out, the political distortions by powerful special interest groups and the fact the the manipulation of county borders by political powers to ensure that they win their elections…

I do not suppose to say that America is the only democracy to hold these types of problems but because of your size and prominence you make a particularly good example.

  49. John Titor Says:

I am surprised to find that some people notice the unlawful actions of the American government, but still do nothing about it. You (the people) could have stopped the Iraq war, you can still stop the Iran war, yet you choose to do nothing except watch the slow and destructive approach to the next world war. No one in any country will forgive the American people for what they have allowed their government to do to this world. Unless, of course, you immediately decide to stand up to this government; not as individuals, but as an entire populace! You have until December 6th; make your choice…lose a few American lives fighting against your own government or allow your government to take the lives of millions abroad. However, we all know who’s number one in America…

You Americas are already in the first phrases of the One World Order police state foretold by Jesus Christ, known as the Antichrist New world order run by the synagogue of satan jews, and those in political power aiding them.
Look at your government, it has many jews already in it, and they are fast gaining control over you, and soon will bring in their so-called noahide laws that has already been passed by evil men serving in politicial offices of America.
This new world order is the forming of America, Canada, and Mexico called the North American Union, which will be controled by the antichrist synagogue of satan jews under their antichrist police state.
These people, and those aiding them are the antichrist beast government Jesus warned you about. They display the star of Satan, and seal of Solomon, and call it the star of David, when in fact it has nothing to do with David, but is the mark of the beast, Satan’s hexagram, and the seal of Solomon who fell into Idolatry, and devil worship.
This so-called star of David is the Hexagram, used by Satan and his followers. This so-called star has six points, six triangles, and the six sided hexagon, that equals 666.
Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
1Ki 10:14 Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold.
2Ch 9:13 Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred and threescore and six talents of gold.

Have you Americans ever really gave it hard consideration why the jews have such a satanic hatred for Jesus Christ, and Christians?
I will tell you why, and it is because they are the antichrist foretold by scriptures, not the chosen of God, not true Israel, not true Judah, not Israelites as your apostate pastors, and priest teach you, but the Edomites, and decendents of Cain.
These are the synagogue of Satan, and sworn enemies of Christ and christians. If you think this is lies, and mis-Information, then start researching for yourselves on your computers, and stop listening to the apostates who tell you otherwise, because they are deceived themselves, and the are the mouth pieces of Satan, and are hiding the truth from you. Wake up, you still can change things, but only if you do it now. I know I will be cursed, and branded an antisemite, but this word is only used against those who expose the deeds of evil doers.
Listen to me people, and do not become part of these tares Christ foretold us about, and seal your eternal fate for backing, and supporting the enemies of the almighty God Jesus Christ.
This is a warning, so heed it well.

  55. Craigushka Says:

The Satanic Alliance of Christians and Jews

    By Rachel Pendergraft

Throughout America and in other white nations, Christians and Jews are steadily forming alliances. A quick internet search will show conferences, meetings, and dialogue between Jews and Christians.

Preachers used to point out to their congregations that America was built on Christian principles. Now, without hesitation they tell their flock that America was built on Judeo-Christian ideals.

Without thought Christian leaders – liberal, mainstream, and fundamentalists – talk of the Judeo-Christian foundation of America and encourages the following of Judeo – Christian values and morals.

To use the term Judeo/Christian is much like saying clean filth. Filth is not clean and Judaism is not Christian

Just recently the majority of the world mourned the death of the Pope. His biggest accomplishment was noted to be his bringing together of Jews and Christians. Yet many Popes in ancient times warned against the teachings of the Jews.

Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, John Hague, Jack Van Empe and dozens more like them have built their mega sized ministries by promoting Israel as a political state and the Jews as a chosen race. Thousands of local church leaders are following this example. They are the Pharisees of today

A marketing plan by TouchPoint Solutions, a Colorado Springs consulting agency hired by Israel’s Ministry of Tourism, describes how to appeal to U.S. evangelicals.

    Highlights include:

Persuading the top 30 evangelical Zionists, through face-to-face meetings, to visit and promote Israel. Those named in a separate TouchPoint document, “Who are the Christian Zionists?” include religious broadcaster Jerry Falwell, Christian Coalition founder Pat Robertson, Texas pastor John Hagee, best-selling author Tim LaHaye

Sending a letter to the 100,000 largest evangelical churches and a postcard to 350,000 others, directing them to Israel’s tourism Web site,

Conducting “Israel Solidarity Days” in 100 cities. Public prayer ceremonies will focus on Israel and its biblical importance. Privately, local evangelical leaders — whether pastors, business people or athletes — will be urged to make “solidarity trips” to Israel. Some will have their expenses paid by Israel.

“The idea is to sell the sellers,” TouchPoint President Butch Maltby said, adding that the multimillion dollar marketing plan has been agreed upon in principle, with certain aspects dependent on funding by the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. Maltby described tourism as more than an economic matter. “It’s also a political tool. Every person that comes to Israel becomes an ambassador to Israel. Every tourist becomes a public relations person.”

At a recent meeting at the Israeli embassy in Washington – 18 national evangelical leaders received the book “Why Christians Should Support Israel,” by Richard Booker, a Texas-based Christian minister.

The embassy’s officer for inter-religious affairs, led a discussion of how Christian college students could lead pro-Israel events on campus and says Israel is reaching out more than ever in the United States. She said, “There’s a new realization that we can activate the Christian grass roots,”

The Pharisees Jesus denounced have not gone away. Some are Christian Pharisees and some are Jewish.

The noun “Pharisee” occurs, according to Strongs’ Concordance, 78 times in the New Testament, much more frequently than “Satan.” Yet usage of the word has been largely eliminated from teaching in many Bibles studies, the pulpits of America’s churches, professing Christian media and even seminaries.

WEBSTER DEFINES PHARISEE: “One of the members of a school or party among the ancient Jews noted for the strict formal observance of the rites and validity of traditions of the elders.” Further on: “Pharisee interpretation provided the standard of observation and belief for the great majority of the Jews from the 1st Century A.D.” Pharisaic: “Hypocritical, self righteous and censorious of others” — Webster’s New International Dictionary of the English Language, 2nd Edition, 1950.

Webster’s definition is an accurate one. Pharisees were in conflict with Jesus whenever they met.

Followers of Christ confronted the Pharisees repeatedly. The followers of the “traditions of the elders” were Jewish and the traditions themselves were perversions of God’s law that came about during the days of mingling during the Bablyon captivity.

These traditions are now known as the “Talmud.” Pharisaism is no longer exclusively Jewish, as it once may have been.

Many patriots who are called haters and anti-Semites will point out the enormous Jewish control of America’s political parties, news media and the banking system. However, so-called Christian leaders will say these people are being intolerant of God’s people. While the Bible firmly tells us that the only way to the Father is through Christ – the false preaches of today would have us believe that the only way to God is through the Jews.

Bernard Lazare, Jewish/Marxist writer (and author of the Communist song Internationale) in his book “Anti-Semitism” on page 350 wrote in 1894 “The Jew is not satisfied with de-Christianizing, he destroys Catholic or Protestant faiths, he provokes indifference but he imposes his idea of the world, of morals and of life upon those whose faith he ruins. He works at his age old task, the annihilation of the religion of Christ!”

The American Jewish Committee, an arm of the ADL put out a policy paper in the 50’s called FACTS

    Here are a few statements:

“There is a pressing need for intensive work with textbook and study materials utilized in public schools and colleges of this country.”

They are upset because”many of the accounts of the crucifixion in world histories are too general to be fully accurate, and some provide a basis for the development of prejudice against the Jews”

An example of this can be seen in the hysteria that resulted when the movie The Passion produced by Mel Gibson was released. Jews around the world threw up their arms and cried that the movie would foster a new round of defamation, hatred, and anti-Semitism. Yet, the movie clearly was not anti-Jewish in any form. It did accusatively portray the Jewish hand in the murder of Christ. Yet, it was pretty benign. The Romans were made out to be the real villains. This only goes to show how hyper-sensitive the Jews are. A mere mention of Jews can get one labeled a hater and bigot.

Continuing statements by the AJC in FACTS:

“Under the auspices of Drew Theological Seminary, we have conducted an exhaustive study of religious textbooks currently used in Protestant schools. Errors, misstatements and misconceptions of the historic role of the Jews in the earliest days of Christianity have been and will continue to be tabulated and brought to the attention of Protestant educators and textbook publishers. As a result of new insights gained through these efforts, there has been steady and significant progress in the elimination of such material”.

    And another:

“In extensive educational campaigns, such as those conducted in behalf of the Genocide convention, civil rights, etc., these activities multiply: up to date fact sheets are continuously prepared for editors, newscasters, organization leaders, etc. favorable opinions of influential citizens are publicized, cooperating organizations are contacted and frequently serviced with specially prepared materials, radio programs are arranged. We work with and through the major national organizations and special interest groups in which millions of Americans are active; labor unions, veterans organizations, youth groups, church groups, and education associations.”

The very fact that the term Judeo/Christian is in popular use today is evidence that Christianity has indeed become intertwined with Judaism. The Christianity taught in the seminaries and as a result the churches can no longer be accurately called Christianity. And yet 99% of those who call them selves born-again Christians see nothing wrong with interfaith conferences of Jews and Christians and now believe that Judaism and Christianity share the same goals and beliefs.

The followers of today’s post Christian faith declare they are believers of Jesus Christ. But what kind of Jesus do they believe in. Most misinterpret the scripture John 3:15″That whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have eternal life“. The Jews believe in Jesus – that is they believe in the existence of a man named Jesus who is their adversary. But to have a belief in Jesus and to believe upon Jesus means to stand for the same principles he stood for. Very few Christians today believe or stand for the principles that Christ stood for.

Are those who”believe” in Jesus following the teachings of Christ or the teachings of the Jews.
